ENG (0122) 275 - Preparing for a Publishing Career


Credits: 3.00

Students will prepare for a number of career requirements, including social media content creation; discipline-specific writing, editing, publishing; and event organizing. It is a hands-on immersive experience where students will create a tangible product that will be shared with a wider audience.

Course Learning Goals: Teams of students will work to create a project in collaboration with a community partner. Accordingly, students in this course will:

  1. Synthesize academic content and apply it to creation of materials and solution of problems; 
  2. Curate and manage literary and academic writing and critical discussion;
  3. Utilize and integrate the principles of good editorial practice and writing for a variety of audiences;
  4. Collaborate with other students to design materials and services and solve problems;
  5. Exercise leadership, manage time effectively, manage project tasks and deadlines; 
  6. Develop and demonstrate professionalism, resiliency, and effective internal and external communication;
  7. Investigate the cultures of academic editing and publishing;
  8. Initiate and maintain a relationship, via social or more traditional media, with alumni of the department and/or local community members as a way to increase their networking abilities;
  9. Provide weekly content for social media, including FB, IG, TikTok, and Twitter.
