ENG (0122) 418 - Advanced Writing for Children


Credits: 3.00

Students will engage in advanced study of the craft of creating written narratives for young readers.  Through analysis of and written exercises in children’s literature, students will develop either a collection of short stories or a novella for readers aged 8-16.

Prerequisite 1: ENG 318  
Course Learning Goals: Students will be able to:

• analyze and utilize the different elements of children’s literature both critically and creatively

● write short stories and novellas for Middle-grade and Young Adult readers

● discuss some of the main topics in children’s literature, such as the representation of gender, generation, ethnicity, and nature, through the writing of original short narrative works

● develop a personal methodology for creating and revising narrative works for Middle-grade and Young Adult readers.
