PHI (0154) 305 - Ancient Philosophy and the Art of Happiness


Credits: 3.00

Students will grapple with the age-old questions of “what is happiness” and “what makes us happy” through the lens of Ancient Greek philosophy. This will be achieved through a close reading of ancient Greek texts from the Epicurean, Stoic, and Skeptical schools of thought.

Course Learning Goals: By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the central themes in the history of Ancient philosophy and its canonical texts.
  2. Differentiate between the set of problems in Stoic, Epicurean, and Skeptic philosophies.
  3. Articulate in writing one’s thoughts and feelings with regards to philosophical concepts and theories regarding happiness. 
  4. Discuss these philosophical arguments in class discussion.
  5. Analyze how these concepts can be applied to one’s life.
