ANT (0103) 232 - Exhibiting Culture in Museums

Students will be introduced to museums as spaces for exhibiting culture through objects. Students explore visual representations of culture, examining ethics and protocols of curating exhibits from multiple perspectives, including descendent communities, visitors, and practitioners. Students also study issues of exhibition design and the transformation of objects into display items.

Free Note: This course requires two independent trips off campus to museums in the NYC/Long Island area (TBD with the instructor). It is the students’ responsibility to pay for travel and admission fees. Suggested budget $30.00.

Course Learning Goals: Students will:

Examine the issues (ethical, political, and professional) involved in the collection, study, and display of culture and cultural objects in museums.
Critically evaluate the content and interpretive strategies of museum exhibitions, programs, websites, and/or other educational programs.
Practice oral communication skills to succinctly and effectively convey information to a broad audience.
Develop research skills relevant to exhibiting culture in museums.
