SMP (0855) 380 - Sport Leadership


Credits: 3.00

Students will be introduced to leadership models, theories and best-practices prevalent in successful sport organizations. Through course material, related readings, discussion forums and guest lectures, students will learn how to adopt sound leadership practices, including DEI, in management, including those that prevent and/or minimize poor sportsmanship/violence during play.

Course Learning Goals: COURSE OBJECTIVES: 

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

 

  1. Analyze the roles and responsibilities of leaders and evaluate sports-related management skills
  2. Critically examine leadership development programs and leadership styles in sport           
  3. Assess global leadership paradigms and differentiate individual leadership philosophies           
  4. Analyze the common challenges faced by sports leaders and evaluate common policies, procedures and administrative decisions in the field of sports.       
  5. Identify effective communication strategies that motivate and inspire people        
  6. Identify ethical issues in sport and evaluate how sport leaders manage and solve problems related to poor sportsmanship and on-field violence
  7.  Apply best practices with regard to establishing and enforcing sound Diversity, Equality and Inclusion policies in sport.
