SMP (0855) 340 - Introduction to E-Sports


Credits: 3.00

Students will be introduced to the growing field of organized e-sports, including the amateur and professional levels. Course material will cover the history of competitive gaming, virtual and live competition, gaming platforms, game development, event hosting, participation and promotion.

Course Learning Goals: After successful completion of this course, students will:

  1. Understand the history and continuing-to-evolve e-sports industry - at its amateur and professional levels.
  2. Be able to identify the elements required to develop and produce competitive video games
  3. Be able to understand the standard terms and conditions required in videogame content licensing agreements.
  4. Be able to recognize and determine the required production cycles for various gaming platforms, including consoles and mobile devices
  5. Be able to determine the requirments needed to host various non-sport e-sports leagues as well as the competitions currently operated by traditional sport properties
  6. Be able to navigate and actively participate in the various online platforms currently serving the e-sports community, including but not limited to Twitch and YouTube.
  7. Will have working knowledge of how professional e-sports organizations structure their staffs, including the recruitment and training of the players
  8. Be able to discuss the issues and opportunities faced by the growing e-sports industry.
