Students will study the evolving role and depiction of children in literature, from androgynous object to fully formed autonomous hero, questioning how these characterizations have both reflected and shaped the constructed identity of children in the modern era.

Prerequisite 1: ENG 250
Course Learning Goals: Students will be able to:

• analyze and utilize the different elements of children’s literature both critically and creatively

● discuss some of the main topics in children’s literature, such as the representation of gender, generation, ethnicity, and nature, through the writing of persuasive essays and a final research paper

● discuss the different genres of children’s literature by drawing on generational, national, and cultural canons of children’s literature

● generate ideas to use children’s literature purposefully and effectively in their own pedagogy and/or creative writing

● use resources of children’s literature in libraries, databases, and on the internet.
