PED (0852) 406 - Elementary Physical Education Activities


Credits: 3.00

This course provides the foundation teaching fundamental motor skills and group games in physical education and other activity settings.  Topics include selecting and teaching developmentally appropriate physical activities, skill progressions, games and game modifications Pre-k-grade five.

Free Note: B.S. or Classes specifically designed for PED Gate Program Teacher Certification (Grad students taking UG methods classes for certification in the evening). 

Course Learning Goals: Students will:

  • be able to identify critical components of proficient movement in a variety of fundamental movement skills (e.g., run, jump, skip, throw, catch) and more sport-specific motor skills in developmentally appropriate physical activities, group games, and sports.  Students will also be able to observe a student’s performance, detect errors, and suggest corrections for more success.
  • be able to prepare and teach a peer lesson demonstrating a practical sequence of tasks in a skill progression for an assigned skill or game, utilizing correct teaching cues and practice strategies similar to differentiated lessons in elementary physical education classes. Students will also write a reflection identifying strengths and areas for improvement based on their peer teaching experience.
  • utilize professional resources to identify and/or create an electronic collection of practice activities, learning experiences, teaching cues, and lead-up activities related to becoming more proficient in selected activities and games.
  • understand and be able to explain the rules, traditions and conventions of selected activities and games. 
  • be able to utilize technology, including video skill analysis to correct and enhance skill and strategy performance of activities and games.
  • be able to demonstrate skill and game play techniques proficiently through a standardized performance assessment (e.g., New York State’s PE Profile assessment tool; and NASPE’s PE Metrics assessments).  They will understand how to administer selected skill assessments.
  • demonstrate appropriate professional behaviors as assessed through the required School of Education Dispositions Rubric.
