SMP (0855) 265 - Introduction to Sport Law & Labor Relations


Credits: 3.00

Students will focus on the legal aspects affecting the sport and leisure industry. The course provides students with a foundational understanding of legal procedures, tort law, constitutional law, contract law, intellectual property law, risk management, labor relations, and other legal subjects related to the administration and management of sport.

Course Learning Goals: Students will learn to:

Recognize labor relation issues in professional sport through the structure of collective bargaining.
Outline the precedent and standards for establishing intellectual property
Apply legal research techniques to locating, reading, and analyzing case law pertinent to recreation and tourism settings.
Apply the fundamental principles of tort law, including negligence, intentional torts, and products liability and apply principles to sport and leisure settings in determining liability.
Critique the validity of waivers, agreements to participate, and contracts through application of essential components of contract law.
Analyze the constitutional legal aspects impacting sport and leisure services through application of the First, Fourth, Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U. S. Constitution.  
Integrate and synthesize legal principles as a capstone learning experience through a mock court presentation.
