FIN (0209) 110 - Personal Finance


Credits: 3.00

Students will learn the basics of personal finance, including time value of money and how it applies to financial decision-making. Topics will include credit and debit payment systems, taxes, car leasing versus purchasing, home renting versus buying, insurance, financial planning and the risk and return characteristics of stocks and bonds.

This course does not count as a business elective, and students that have taken the Freshman Seminar: “Your Money and Your Life” can not take this course.

Course Learning Goals: By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of time value of money and risk versus return
  • Evaluate investment alternatives and make sound investment decisions
  • Understand the role of government and taxes in the economy
  • Analyze major sources of consumer credit such as credit cards
  • Be able to analyze automobile leasing decisions as well as the rent versus buy decision for housing
  • Become aware of the issues surrounding retirement planning and the role of the public and private sector
