ART (0104) 456 - Advanced Animation Projects


Credits: 3.00

Students will apply skills developed in areas of animation, story-telling, and film production to produce individual animated projects of several minutes in length. Students will prepare and present premises for their film, a pitch bible, plot, script, story-boards, and animated sequences in preparation for producing the final film.

Prerequisite 1: ART (0104) 295/COM (0108) 295 - Visual Narrative I  and COM 225  and COM 345   
Course Learning Goals: Part I: Conceiving the project 

Students will:

  • develop and present a proposal for a short animated film.
  • write a logline and premise for the proposed film and if appropriate, character description(s) and description of context and/or the environment the proposed characters inhabit.
  • develop two-dimensional concept art featuring: character designs; prop designs; environments; and examples displaying the visual stylizations appropriate to the project.
     

Part II: Preparing the film

Students will:

  • write a “shooting script” indicating scenes, shots, environments, characters, and, if necessary, dialogue.
  • create a storyboard of the film project.
  • translate the storyboard into a brief animatic indicating sound, timing, and any necessary edits.
  • plan out timing and animation for each scene.
     

Part III: Producing the film

Students will:

  • record dialogue and collect or record any required sound and music clips.
  • animate each scene in the method appropriate to their project (2D, drawn, digital, etc.).
  • upload and import their animated sequences and recordings into Adobe After Effects.
  • edit their projects, bringing audio and visual elements together and timing the film appropriately.
  • upload their films to YouTube or another video platform.
  • present their films to the class.
