ENV (0125) 405 - GIS in Public Health


Credits: 3.00

Students will learn the uses of geographic information systems (GIS) in public health. Topics include access to health services, the spatial clustering of health events and natural environmental hazards using effective visualization, and communication of information derived from geospatial data.

Course Learning Goals:
  • Acquire, evaluate, and process demographic and health geospatial data from a variety of sources.

  • Prepare effective visualizations to communicate the results of geospatial data analysis using.

  • Create compelling application materials for jobs in public health that can utilize GIS skills.

  • Perform basic analysis of geospatial data to answer questions involving public health to explain the dynamics of health human behavior.

  • Critically evaluate the accuracy, validity, and limitations of geospatial data and geospatial data sources.

  • Make ethical choices in the collection, analysis, and communication of geospatial information.
