MUA (0195) 105 - Beginning Guitar


Credits: 2.00

Students will learn the skills necessary to begin study of the guitar, including musical notation, proper technique, scales, arpeggios, chords, rhythm, repertoire, improvisation, and ensemble playing.

Free Note: This course has no prerequisites and does not require guitar skills or training. Students must bring their own acoustic guitar. For questions about how to purchase an instrument for class, contact the professor.

Course Learning Goals: Students will:

-Practice playing the guitar alone and in groups to develop a sense of confidence;

-Learn and practice fundamentals of guitar technique;

-Learn and perform solo and group songs on the guitar;

-Read simple guitar notation, lead sheets, and tablature;

-Correctly play basic scales, arpeggios, and chords;

-Develop and perform ideas of music phrases, leading to informed interpretation of music;

-Synthesize beginning guitar technique with musical interpretation in live performance;

-Use correct music vocabulary related to guitar playing.
