SWK (0404) 754 - Social Work Practice With Veterans And Military Families


Credits: 3.00

Students will be immersed into carefully designed topics aimed at mastery in treatment to veterans and active duty personnel.  Trauma-informed skills and evidence-based practices that address post-war issues of anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) suicide, sexual assault, and traumatic brain injury will be discussed.

Course Learning Goals: At the end of the course, students will be able to:

1. articulate knowledge of population characteristics and relevant physical and mental health issues for current and former military personnel.

2. provide prevention, treatment and rehabilitative services to service members, Veterans, their families and their communities.

3. utilize a specialized scope of practice skills applicable to individuals, couples, families and groups within the military population.

4. identify gaps in service and  begin the process of developing and implementing programs, policies and procedures to improve the quality of life for service members, Veterans, their families and their communities.
