LAN (0139) 101 - Introduction to Intercultural Competence


Credits: 3.00

Students will develop theoretical, methodological, and practical insights into intercultural competence, which refers to effective negotiation of divergent culturally-defined worldviews.  Such worldviews affect both individuals’ opinions and their behaviors. In this course, students will apply and analyze the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for cross-cultural perspective-taking and appropriate cross-cultural exchange.

Course Learning Goals: Students will identify and compare culturally specific values and practices tied to gender roles, the place of religion in society, and the roles of the individual and the family in community structure.
Students will articulate ways in which identity is tied to language.
Students will identify and compare culturally specific attitudes and practices to business practices, health care, and education.
Students will consolidate and demonstrate proficiency in negotiating intercultural conflict or difference.
