Credits: 3.00

Students will explore mindfulness and nonviolent communication principles and techniques while examining historical dialogues based on primary and secondary historical sources, and applying these, along with theatre warmup techniques to perform the dialogues.

Course Learning Goals:
  1. Articulate, through in-class discussions and a final presentation, the key themes and theories presented by historical figures and how these relate to mindfulness and nonviolent communication.
  2. Gain skills in oral and written communication that is nonviolent in nature that will aid them in expressing themselves from a mindful perspective.
  3. Gain skills in verbal communication that will potentially aid them in community building.
  4. Gain a four week certificate in Koru mindfulness that can be put on their resume and discuss with potential employers how this will aid them in their work.
  5. Discuss the subject of mindfulness in terms of how it reflects new modes of thinking and how it can help to reduce stress and promote wellbeing.
  6. Gain the tools to assess how individuals in the past have sought to create cultures of compassion and emphasized compassionate principles. What has this meant, in practice, as evidenced through the historical figures they have examined in this class?
  7. Gain the tools to be able to assess when a historical figure has not been mindful or has evolved to become mindful.
