NUR (0302) 474 - Biopsychosocial Approaches To Addiction Treatment


Credits: 3.00

Students will develop the ability for critical reflection, exploration, and discussion about addiction in all its manifestations, including alcohol use disorder, chemical dependency, and behavioral addictions. Students will also describe interrelated and multifaceted bio-psycho-social and healthcare issues that define addictions. 

Course Learning Goals: Students will be able to:
1. Deconstruct principles and dynamics of the disease concept of addiction; 
2. Examine the bio-psycho-social model of addiction and addictive behaviors; 
3. Analyze the processes of change for recovery from addiction;
4. Implement effective therapeutic communication techniques for treatment;
5. Evaluate patient-driven healthcare models and systems that incorporate comprehensive care plans for addictive behaviors; and,
6. Appraise the operation of and access to support group agencies that are available to help someone overcome an addiction.
7. Describe the various effects of addiction to personal, professional, social, economic and civic aspects of an individual’s life.
