SPE (0876) 210 - Speech And Hearing Science

Credits: 3.00

Students will 1) describe basic anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, 2) identify physical attributes of simple sounds, including pitch and loudness variation, and complex sounds, especially speech, and 3) use instrumentation to assess characteristics of speech and other sounds.

Prerequisite 1: SPE 140 SPE 142
Course Learning Goals: ● Students will identify and describe the anatomical components of the auditory system.

● Students will describe processes of auditory physiology including movement of the basilar membrane and the function of the hair cells.

● Students will relate loudness and pitch percepts to differences in the acoustic signal and solve quantitative problems relating to decibels and frequency.

● Students will differentiate between simple and complex sounds, and state how spectral analysis is used in the analysis of complex sounds.

● Students will use instrumentation to assess characteristics of speech and other sounds, and carry out measurements of speech sounds including fundamental frequency, vowel formants, and consonant acoustics.
