ETH (0893) 508 - Exploring the Arts: Creative Dramatics, Pre-K-6

Students will explore the history, foundations and methods of creative dramatics, including theatre games, creative movement, story drama, playmaking, theatre in education, and drama-based instruction, among others. They will explore the role of literature and script writing in the creative dramatics curriculum

Course Learning Goals: Students will:

Explore the history of creative dramatics

Consider the importance of play for human well-being

Compare and Contrast process and product in arts education

Examine the meaning of creative movement and its relationship to well-being

Examine the life and work of educational theatre pioneers Winifred Ward, Nellie McCaslin, Viola Spolin, and Dorothy Heathcote

Side-Coach a range of creative dramatics experiences

Explore the role of teaching artists in playmaking

Analyze the distinctions between TIE (Theatre in Education) DIE (Drama in Education), Applied Theatre and Theatre of the Oppressed and their educational applications.

Articulate the contribution of creative dramatics to learning in the arts and other content areas

Design a creative dramatics program for children
