ENG (0122) 318 - Writing for Children


Credits: 3.00

Students will study the craft of creating written narratives for young readers.  Through close analysis of picture books, fairy tales, and Middle-grade and Young Adult literature, and through written exercises that emulate each form, students will develop a portfolio of short works for readers ages 5-16.

Prerequisite 1: ENG 109   
Students will be able to:

• write text for picture books for young readers and short stories for Middle-grade and Young Adult readers

● analyze and utilize the different elements of children’s literature both critically and creatively

● employ topics in children’s literature, such as the representation of gender, generation, ethnicity, and nature, in their own creative works

● place their own creative writing in dialogue with published texts, through both allusions in their creative work and writing critically of how their creative work is both reflective of and expands the genre of children’s literature 

● develop a personal methodology for creating and revising short narrative works for young audiences.
