SPY (0504) 603 - Doctor of Psychology in School Psychology


Credits: 3.00

Students will review contemporary theories of individual and collective trauma with particular emphasis on understanding the social origins of trauma, the impact of trauma on a child’s well-being and development, the mechanisms of intergenerational transmission and the therapist’s role in bearing witness to trauma narratives and expressions.

Prerequisite 1: SPY 610  SPY 605  
1. Learn to identify the different types of primary trauma and to distinguish their impact on a child’s development

2. Learn to distinguish between experiences of primary versus secondary trauma 

3. Familiarize students with theories pertinent to the conceptualization of the effects of trauma on children and adolescents

4. Familiarize students with various treatment modalities of trauma and their relation to different theoretical orientations or

5. Explore assessment and multi-modal treatments for trauma related disorders, and some evidence based practices commonly use in trauma interventions

6. Explain mechanisms of intergenerational trauma transmission

7. Understand transferential issues in trauma treatment

8. Review the scope and effectiveness of different treatment modalities in addressing trauma

9. Practice oral and written skills to communicate theoretical and clinical material
