This course surveys the development of music theater from the origins of opera in the Renaissance to American works of the 21st century. Representative works will be considered in their cultural and societal contexts, including such composers as Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Wagner, Verdi, Puccini, Gershwin, Bernstein and Sondheim.
