SPH (0878) 683 - Accent Modification Services in Speech-Language Pathology


Credits: 3.00

Students will learn evidence-based practices and techniques for providing accent modification services in speech-language pathology. Students will gain knowledge of code-switching, dialects and foreign accents. A systematic approach to assessment and intervention selection will be reinforced.

Upon completion of the course, students will:

  1. describe the characteristics of at least four English dialects in use in the United States;
  2. explain psychosocial factors involved in the loss or manipulation of one’s dialect;
  3. design an appropriate case history questionnaire for non-native speakers seeking to modify their accents;
  4. analyze the phonology of a given dialect and compare/contrast it with standard English including-
    1. presence/absence of English consonants,
    2. allophonic changes in consonants shared by both languages,
    3. substitutions for sounds not in the primary language,
    4. presence/absence of English vowels,
    5. substitutions for vowels not in the primary language;
  5. analyze vocal dynamics including-
    1. pitch,
    2. volume,
    3. quality,
    4. intonation,
    5. resonance;
  6. analyze the prosodic features of a dialect (stress, intonation, phrasing, linking, and rate);
  7. describe the primary characteristics of American English phonology and intonation;
  8. plan, develop, and execute a dialect modification program for an individual and/or group of 2-10 people.
